Overall Purpose and Goals In May 2001, the Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) from the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) redefined the levels at which blood cholesterol should be treated. As a result of these latest guidelines, many more patients, perhaps as many as 30 million Americans, are now candidates for intensive lipid-lowering therapy. We will discuss new approaches in the management and treatment of hyperlipidemias.
